What are Secondary School Apprenticeship and Scholarship (SSA) Programs?
Secondary School Apprenticeship is a program that allows students to begin an apprenticeship - in this case in one of the automotive trades - while still in high school. The student works in the trade part-time, while at the same time earning high school credits for the courses.
There are definite advantages to enrolment in an SSA program:
- Students tend to stay in school and graduate
- It provides for faster trade certification, sometimes as much as two years
- It is easier for students to go from school to full-time work because the student has already been working part-time
It is the responsibility of the student to locate an employer who will not only hire them, but will also sponsor their apprenticeship.
SSA Scholarship
High school students can qualify for a $1,000 scholarship if they meet certain criteria. The student must have:
- been registered in the SSA program prior to graduation
- graduated with a Grade 12 Dogwood Diploma or an Adult Dogwood
- successfully completed SSA 11A, SSA 11B, SSA 12A, SSA 12B
- maintained a C+ or better average on Grade 12 numbered courses
- continued working or training full-time in the trade for at least 5 months after graduation or have reported 1100 hours to ITA.
