  1. How long does it take to complete an apprenticeship?
  2. Generally it takes 3 to 4 years to complete an apprenticeship, depending upon the length of the program.

  3. How much does the in-class training cost?

    The tuition varies from institution to institution. You can find that information for specific institutions by contacting them directly.

  4. Does my employer pay me while I’m in school and not on the job?

    An apprentice may be eligible for Employment Insurance for that period, but generally an employer does not pay an apprentice while he or she is taking the in-class technical training.

  5. Do I have to be sponsored by an employer?

    Yes, both the apprentice and the employer must register with the Industry Training Authority. The employer is responsible for overseeing the on-the-job portion of the training and has specific duties in this regard.

  6. How do I find an employer who will sponsor me?
  7. While job-searching, the easiest way to find out is to ask an employer if he or she will sponsor an apprentice.

  8. What happens if I change jobs during my apprenticeship?

    It will be necessary to ensure that the first employer has completed the documentation required up to the time you leave, and that the new employer registers as your sponsor.

  9. Do I have to register for the in-class technical training as soon as I’m registered as an apprentice?
  10. As the classes can become full very quickly, it is important to register for the in-class training as soon as possible. This will also ensure that you and your employer are able to plan for your absence well in advance. It is also a good idea to register for the next class as soon as you have completed each level.

  11. Does my employer provide me with tools, or do I have to purchase them myself?

    Although the employer will have larger equipment on hand, generally an apprentice is expected to provide his or her own tools. However, there is now a tax credit available for apprentices who must purchase their own tool. For more information on this click on these links:
